Planning your visit
Castel Sant'Angelo began as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, also called Mole Adriana and Mausoleo di Adriano, before becoming the Castle of the Holy Angel and the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo. Inside, the fortress combines Roman foundations, Renaissance rooms, papal apartments associated with Pope Clement VII, and the bronze Archangel Michael above the roof.
The main route rises through historic ramparts and courtyards to the Terrazza dell'Angelo, where the view reaches across the Tiber River toward Rome. The terrace is also linked to Tosca Puccini because the final act of Giacomo Puccini’s opera takes place at Castel Sant'Angelo.
For Castel Sant'Angelo tickets, the official visitor information lists opening hours from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 19:30, with last admission at 18:30; Monday is closed, including Monday, August 17, 2026. The first Sunday of each month has free admission without online reservation, with visitors joining the single queue at the ticket office.
The entrance is at Lungotevere Castello 50 beside Ponte Sant’Angelo, about 10–15 minutes on foot from Saint Peter’s Square. From Rome Metro Line A, Lepanto metro station is roughly a 12-minute walk, while Ottaviano metro station is about 15 minutes away; a skip-the-line entry ticket can reduce the ticket-office wait, but security screening still applies to visitors.
Before you buy
Concrete caveats: security, bags, cancellation, time slots.
- Tickets are strictly nominative. You must present an original physical ID (passport or national ID card; digital photos/copies are not accepted) matching the exact name on your ticket, or entry will be denied without a refund.
- There is no cloakroom or luggage storage inside the monument. Large bags, backpacks, and suitcases are not permitted inside, meaning you must pay for external luggage storage nearby before arriving.
- 'Skip-the-line' or priority tickets only bypass the ticket office queue. All visitors must still wait in the same security screening line, which can experience bottlenecks during peak hours.
- If you are visiting in a group of 10 to 20 people, you are required to use radioguides, which cost an additional €2 per person.
- On free admission days (such as the first Sunday of the month), online reservations are disabled. All visitors must stand in a single, often very long, physical queue at the ticket office to collect their free entry pass.
- The historic fortress features steep ramps, uneven stone steps, and narrow passages. Strollers and wheelchairs cannot access most upper levels, and there are no elevators to the top terrace.
- Certain areas, such as the Farnese Rooms and the Room of Love and Psyche, may be temporarily closed for ongoing restoration and maintenance, which does not entitle ticket holders to a discount or refund.
Frequently asked questions
The things people ask most.
Do "skip-the-line" tickets bypass the security queue?
No. While skip-the-line tickets bypass the ticket office queue, all visitors must still stand in the mandatory security check line at the single main entrance facing Ponte Sant'Angelo.
Are tickets personalized, and do I need to show ID?
Yes. Tickets are strictly personal and registered to your name. You must show a matching physical ID (passport or national ID card) at the entrance, or you will be denied entry without a refund.
Can I bring a backpack or luggage inside?
No. Castel Sant'Angelo has no luggage storage or cloakroom. Large bags, suitcases, and bulky backpacks exceeding 30 x 30 x 15 cm are prohibited, so you must use an external storage service nearby.
How do free and reduced-price tickets work?
EU citizens aged 18–25 qualify for a €2 reduced ticket. Children under 18 and disabled visitors enter free. For the free-admission first Sunday of the month, online booking is unavailable; all visitors must queue at the ticket office on-site.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Official tickets are non-refundable and non-modifiable, though a name change is allowed up to 24 hours prior. If you need flexible cancellation, check the terms of third-party sellers like Tiqets before booking.
What is the main bottleneck inside the castle?
The narrow staircases and helical ramp leading up to the Angel's Terrace (7th floor) get heavily congested. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst crowds and midday summer heat.
What happens if I arrive late for my booked time slot?
Entry is strictly tied to your selected time slot. Late arrivals risk being turned away by staff at the gate, and no refunds or rescheduling will be provided for missed slots.
